Health and safety

Talk to a doctor or another qualified health professional before you start, and ask whether the plan suits you. This matters most if you have a heart, lung, kidney or joint condition, high blood pressure or diabetes, take regular medication, are pregnant or recently gave birth, have had surgery or an injury, or have not exercised for a long time.
Education, not medical advice
Lifelong Method gives general training and nutrition education. It is not medical advice, diagnosis or treatment, and it does not replace a doctor, physiotherapist, dietitian or other health professional who knows you. No health professional reviews individual plans. Plans are produced by software from your answers and from published advice.
Stop and get help
Stop exercising straight away and get medical help if you have:
- chest pain, pressure or tightness
- severe or unusual shortness of breath
- dizziness, fainting or feeling faint
- a racing, pounding or irregular heartbeat
- sharp pain, or pain that gets worse as you continue
In an emergency, call your local emergency number (112 in Europe, 911 in the US and Canada, 999 in the UK).
What the health check does, and does not do
The short health check in the plan builder adapts your plan: for example, it removes hard intervals if you report a heart condition, swaps exercises for sore wrists or shoulders, and leaves out protein targets and some supplements with kidney disease. It cannot spot every risk, and answering it is not a medical check-up.
Food and supplements
- Protein targets and meal plans are general guides. If you have kidney disease, diabetes or a food allergy, agree your eating with your doctor or a dietitian.
- Ask a doctor or pharmacist before taking any supplement, especially if you take medication, are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Protein and fruit-and-vegetable amounts in meal plans are estimates.
- If you have, or have had, an eating disorder, please do not use the meal plans without support from a health professional.
About the experts
Expert profiles summarise each expert’s public advice in our own words. Plans are built from their published principles; they are not the experts’ own programmes, and no expert has reviewed, approved or endorsed Lifelong Method. Evidence ratings are our own reading of the research.
Your responsibility
You decide whether and how to follow a plan. Start gently, listen to your body and choose the easier version of any exercise when in doubt. Lifelong Method is for adults aged 18 and over.
